Argonne National Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy research center located in Lemont, Illinois, just outside Chicago. Founded in 1946 as the successor to the Manhattan Project’s Metallurgical Laboratory, Argonne conducts multidisciplinary science and engineering research—from advanced materials and energy storage to high‑performance computing and environmental studies—and operates major user facilities like the Advanced Photon Source and Leadership Computing Facility.
