OCPP & QR code payment in Japan
QR code payments are becoming an increasingly important part of everyday payment behavior in Japan, with services such as PayPay, Rakuten Pay, d-Barai, au PAY and LINE Pay widely used across retail, hospitality and service environments. For public EV charging, these payment methods can offer a convenient way to support ad hoc charging without the need for RFID cards, proprietary charging apps or physical payment terminals.
This OCA white paper explores how QR code payments can be integrated into OCPP 2.1 and 2.0.1 charging networks. It explains the main architectural models for dynamic QR code and API-based payment flows, including approaches managed through the CSMS or directly by the charging station. The paper also outlines how OCPP can support both prepaid and authorization-based payment models, and highlights important security considerations for implementing QR code payments in EV charging infrastructure.
