New White Paper: Open and Interoperable Electric Vehicle Charging in Emerging Markets

The transition to electric mobility is accelerating across the world, including in emerging markets where charging infrastructure is often still in an early stage of development. This creates an important opportunity to build charging ecosystems that are open, interoperable and ready to grow with the market.
During Africa E-Mobility Week 2026, OCA Director Lonneke Driessen presented our new whitepaper Open and Interoperable Electric Vehicle Charging in Emerging Markets during the session “How to Design and Develop Harmonised EV Charging Standards Across Africa?”. Together with Alexander Koerner (UNEP), Emmanuel Kirwa (ARSO), Aline Uwamahoro (RURA) and Moses Ntlamelle (SADC), the session focused on the role harmonised standards and interoperability can play in the further development of EV charging infrastructure across Africa.
The new whitepaper, developed with support from UNEP and GIZ, explores how OCPP can support charging infrastructure in emerging markets and addresses topics such as intermittent connectivity, power grid reliability, mobile-money payments, battery swapping and cost-effective charging solutions. It also includes a case study from Kenya.
By implementing open standards from the beginning, emerging EV markets can reduce fragmentation and create charging infrastructure that can continue to evolve as the market grows.
