OCPP : OCPP protocols
To keep up with the industry needs the Open Charge Alliance works together with the members to continously develop and improve OCPP. As a result of this hard work the Open Charge Alliance releases whitepapers, errata and new versions of OCPP.
About OCPP
The Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) provides a standardized communication method between charge points and central systems. It enables interoperability between any charge point and central system, regardless of vendor—helping to avoid integration issues and supporting the growth of the EV market.
History of OCPP
OCPP was first developed in 2009 by ElaadNL, who faced challenges installing public charging stations due to the lack of standardized communication between charging stations and central systems. To solve this, they created and freely shared the first version of OCPP.
As the EV market grew, so did interest in OCPP. ElaadNL continued developing the protocol but eventually co-founded the Open Charge Alliance (OCA) with four key contributors to ensure dedicated global stewardship. Under OCA, OCPP evolved with new versions, enhanced features, and improved quality.
Whitepapers
In addition to the OCPP specification, OCA publishes whitepapers covering related topics, proposed extensions, and in-depth explanations of specific OCPP features. You can explore all whitepapers at the link below.
Available version of OCPP
As mentioned OCPP has been around since 2009, however the old versions of OCPP are not supported by OCA anymore. At the moment their are three versions of OCA supported by OCA:
- OCPP 1.6 was released in 2015.
- OCPP 2.0.1 was released in 2020. OCPP 2.0.1 ed3 was approved as an IEC standard (IEC63584) in 2024.
- OCPP 2.1 was released in 2025.
The details of each version can be found when clicking on one of the versions below.
